5.1 Feasting in Fellowship

The maiden attempt of the Prophet to introduce the message of Islam to his kith and kin at Makkah as per the “command of God” (Qur’an 26: 214) was by inviting them to a banquet in his home. (Haykal, 1976, p.84) However, his uncle Abu Lahab spoiled this attempt and ridiculed him. Prophet’s second attempt too proved futile. The Prophet continued this practice throughout his Prophetic career. He was always in the habit of sharing his food with his companions. Further he used to accept invitations for feasting from people from all walks of life including Jews. He also made it a point to use such occasions to teach.
